JB Rawcliffe & Sons is one of the UK's most established heavy haulage specialists, operating since 1967 from their base in Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Experts in the movement of abnormal and indivisible loads — from industrial machinery and power station components to oversized structural beams — they operate across the full length of the UK, coordinating complex logistics that most hauliers simply won't attempt.
They approached SIPTA to document four separate abnormal load deliveries across the country — each one a different project, a different environment, and a different set of challenges. The brief was to capture the scale, precision and skill involved in what they do, and produce films that could demonstrate their capabilities to prospective clients across the infrastructure, energy, and construction sectors.
THE BRIEF
Flying in restricted and controlled airspace
Two of the four shoot locations presented serious airspace restrictions that would ground most drone operators. The first was MOD St Athans in South Wales — an active RAF base where any unauthorised drone activity within the controlled airspace constitutes a criminal offence. The second was a delivery routed adjacent to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, where aircraft on final approach pass at low altitude and the CAA enforces strict no-fly zones within the surrounding area.
These aren't locations where you can simply launch and hope for the best. Any drone operation in these environments requires formal authorisation, precise flight planning, and real-time coordination with aviation authorities — all while keeping pace with a moving abnormal load convoy that won't stop for a camera crew.
